Is Zell am See Good for Beginners? Where to Start Skiing
Yes, Zell am See is good for beginners. You start on Schmidolin's Magic Carpet, a nursery slope with a covered conveyor belt at the valley station of the areitXpress gondola in Schüttdorf, and 30 of the Schmittenhöhe's 77 km of runs are blue. One catch: the Schüttabfahrt is red, so take the gondola down until you can ski red runs.
My personal highlight: a few runs on the Schmittenhöhe, with the glorious view over Zell am See and the surrounding mountains.

What makes Zell am See good for beginners?
The Schmittenhöhe, Zell am See's local mountain, lets you learn at the bottom, on terrain made for it. The practice area by the areitXpress valley station is laid out for beginners and ski schools: the slope is extra wide, gently flat and free of fast skiers. All the valley lifts can be reached directly from the valley, without a cable car ride.
The Schmittenhöhe is a family ski area with wide family pistes, and the local ski schools teach skiers of all ages.
It suits a mixed group, too. The Schmittenhöhe also has 28 km of red and 19 km of black runs, so the stronger skiers in your party have plenty to do while you learn.

Where do beginners start on the Schmittenhöhe?
On Schmidolin's Magic Carpet, beside the valley station of the areitXpress. On the piste map, the practice slope is blue and the magic carpet that carries you back up is 120 m long. Ski schools, ski hire and places to eat are close by, and there is a ski depot at the valley station. Hotel Der Schütthof is not on the slopes, but the areitXpress valley station is about 5 minutes' walk from the hotel.
For children there is the Bambilift, a children's lift on the same valley-lift fares as Schmidolin's Magic Carpet, and the Kidsslope.
In town, the Zell am See ski school also runs beginners' courses from the cityXpress gondola, which you reach from the hotel by bus (in winter, the ski bus). On those courses you practise at the gondola's top station (the school's meeting point G).
When you are ready for the mountain, the areitXpress takes you up to 1,400 m in seven minutes, and in winter the Areitbahn II and III or the Glocknerbahn take you further up from its top station. On the mountain, the blue Glocknerwiese is where you learn to ski with Schmidolin, the Schmitten dragon. Other blue slopes are the Zeller Skiweg and the Hochzellerpiste, and the Breiteckpiste is partly blue; the Schmittenhöhe's interactive ski map shows where each one runs.
In winter there is also a ski school and a sports shop at the top station of the Areitbahn III. Every run and lift on the Schmittenhöhe, the other ways up from town and the bus to Kaprun are in our guide to skiing in Zell am See.
How many lessons does a beginner need?
The Zell am See ski school recommends three, four or five days of lessons for beginners, on consecutive days, because each day builds on the one before. Its adult beginners' groups run from Sunday to Thursday, 10 am to 12 noon and 1 pm to 3 pm. Beginners start only on Sundays and Mondays, so arrive by Saturday and you can start on the Sunday.
You need no experience. The course takes you from gliding and safe stopping to controlled turning, step by step and at your own pace, and group lessons are generally held in German or English. If you last skied years ago, you are placed by ability on the first day: G1 is for your first time on skis, G2 for basic skills.
In a group you learn alongside people at your level; in private lessons the instructor can respond more closely to your own needs and goals. The ski schools on the Schmittenhöhe and the Kitzsteinhorn also run courses designed for children, and the Zell am See ski school recommends a helmet, which it says is compulsory for children up to 15.
| Adult beginners' group lessons | Zell am See ski school |
|---|---|

| Christmas and New Year | Courses start almost every day from 20 to 28 December 2026; no group lessons on 1 and 2 January 2027 |
| Group size | At least 4 people; with fewer, groups are combined or lesson time is shortened |
| Not included | Lift pass and equipment |
| Ski school offices | At the areitXpress, cityXpress and trassXpress valley stations, daily 8.30 am to 5 pm, December to April |
For lessons, the hotels' ski instructor, Jürgen from the Skischule Zell am See-Kaprun, is at the main reception of Hotel Latini next door for any questions, and you can book lessons with him there; he teaches in English too.
At the same reception you can buy the Ski ALPIN CARD lift pass without queuing, or order it before you arrive and collect it at check-in; the pass comes on a KeyCard with a €2 deposit. The hotel's own ski hire is open daily from 8 am to 12 noon and 2 pm to 6 pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 am to 6 pm. There is enough equipment for hotel guests, so you do not need to reserve, and you get 10% off the whole range: a Top Carver set of skis, boots and poles costs €36 for one day or €165 for six or seven days in 2026/27, before the discount. Your skis and boots can stay in the camera-monitored ski room, open from 6 am to 9 pm with your room key card, but take your helmet up to your room, as helmets sometimes get mixed up. You will find more on ski holidays at Hotel Der Schütthof.
Do beginners need a lift pass in Zell am See?
Yes, but not straight away. The Zell am See ski school says beginners on its courses need no lift pass for the first one or two days at its areitXpress and trassXpress stations, where the practice lifts have their own, much cheaper beginner tickets. If your course starts at the cityXpress, you need a lift pass from the first day. Your instructor will tell you, as you progress, when to buy one.
On the Schmittenhöhe lift company's price list, the valley-lift ticket for Schmidolin's Magic Carpet or the Bambilift costs, in euros including 10% VAT:
| Schmidolin's Magic Carpet or Bambilift | Adults | Children |
|---|---|---|
| Day, from 9 am | €13 | €13 |
| Morning until 12.30 pm, or afternoon from 12.30 pm | €11 | €11 |
| Single ride | €2.50 | €2.50 |
| 10-ride card | €11 | €11 |
Children's prices are for children born 2011 to 2020. Children born in 2021 or later ride free with an adult, on the Schmittenhöhe as on the Kitzsteinhorn, the Maiskogel and the Lechnerberg.
Once you leave the nursery slope for the mountain, you need a lift pass: here, the Ski ALPIN CARD. What it costs for a day or a week, and which pass suits your trip, is in our guide to Zell am See lift pass prices for 2026/27.
What do beginners find hard in Zell am See?
The red and black runs, and timing your trip for the snow. The Tannwald run is red too; it was widened in summer 2026. The Trass, with gradients of up to 70 per cent, and the Standard run are black; the Trass is one of the longest and most challenging black runs in the Salzburger Land.
As for the snow, the Schmittenhöhe plans to open for the season on 4 December 2026, snow and weather permitting. Before you book, check the planned dates on its opening hours page.
Is Kaprun good for beginners?
Yes, for first turns. In Kaprun, a bus ride from Zell am See, beginners start on the Lechnerberg in the town centre and on the Maiskogel, which is part of the Kitzsteinhorn ski area.
| Beginner area | Lifts and easy runs | Altitude on the piste map |
|---|---|---|
| Lechnerberg, Kaprun town centre | Lechnerberg lifts; the Lechnerbergpiste | 770 to 835 m |
| Maiskogel | Maisi practice lifts; the Maisi practice run (Übungspiste Maisi), the Familienabfahrt and the Schaufelberg Abfahrt valley run | 1,108 to 1,175 m (Maisi lifts) |
Maiskogel lift passes are valid in the family and beginner area from 5 December 2026, and the Maiskogel day pass also covers the Lechnerberg. Schüttdorf is also a good base for skiing on the Kitzsteinhorn: the bus stop is 5 minutes on foot from Hotel Der Schütthof.
Kaprun's Kitzsteinhorn glacier is high-alpine and rarely the place for a first day on skis. Its practice lift, the Schneehasenlift, sits at 2,600 to 2,650 m, and the Schneehasenpiste and the Alpincenterpiste are marked easy on the piste map. Thanks to its altitude, the glacier has a long season, with skiing from 10 October 2026, planned until May 2027, depending on weather and snow. Hotel Der Schütthof itself is closed from 26 October to 26 November 2026.
The 3K K-ONNECTION, the lift from Kaprun over the Maiskogel to the glacier, runs again from December 2026; until then, Gletscherjet 1 and 2 take you up to the glacier. Operating hours depend on weather, snow and operations, so check the Kitzsteinhorn's opening hours on the day.
Whether Schüttdorf, the town centre or Kaprun suits you as a base is in our guide to where to stay in Zell am See.

Frequently asked questions
What should beginners look for in a ski resort in Austria?
A resort where you learn at the bottom of the mountain with no cable car ride, with a ski school, ski hire and the ticket desk beside the nursery slope, and plenty of blue runs to move on to. Zell am See's Schmittenhöhe offers all three, starting at the areitXpress valley station in Schüttdorf.

Working in quality management, I am involved in all sorts of things at the hotel: sometimes at reception, sometimes in the office, and really wherever there is something to be done. For me, Zell am See is not just where I work; it is a place I have grown very fond of, with its mountains, its lake and some truly special moments. My personal highlight: a few runs on the Schmittenhöhe, with the glorious view over Zell am See and the surrounding mountains.
