Is Zell am See Snow Sure? Conditions by Month and Ski Area
Yes, Zell am See is snow sure on the mountain from December to early April, though nobody can guarantee natural snow. On the Schmittenhöhe, the town's own ski area, the lift company reports snowmaking on every piste, and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier in Kaprun has a longer season, from October to May, its operator says. In town, snow is less reliable. Hotel Der Schütthof in Schüttdorf is about 5 minutes on foot from both the areitXpress gondola up the Schmittenhöhe and the bus stop for the Kitzsteinhorn.
My personal highlight: a few runs on the Schmittenhöhe, with the glorious view over Zell am See and the surrounding mountains.

The Schmittenhöhe and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier compared
Hotel Der Schütthof in Schüttdorf is about 5 minutes on foot from the areitXpress valley station, the way up the Schmittenhöhe, and 5 minutes on foot from the bus stop for the Kitzsteinhorn, so a ski holiday at the hotel can take in both mountains.
| Mountain | What keeps the snow |
|---|---|
| Schmittenhöhe, Zell am See | Snowmaking covers every piste, according to the lift company's 2024/25 annual report; the company makes snow only where it is needed |
| Kitzsteinhorn glacier, Kaprun | Altitude, with pistes up to 3,029 m: natural snow on the glacier, and snow stored over the summer for the autumn start |

When does it snow in Zell am See?
On the mountain, between October and May: in the 1971 to 2000 averages for the Schmittenhöhe weather station (1,973 m), published by ZAMG, now GeoSphere Austria, new snow fell in each of those months, and snow lay on the ground on almost every day from December to April. These averages describe natural snow at the top of the mountain, not the pistes lower down or the Kitzsteinhorn, and they are not a forecast for this winter.
| Month | Skiing in 2026/27, snow and weather permitting | Days with snow on the ground, Schmittenhöhe weather station (1,973 m), 1971 to 2000 average | Of those, days with 20 cm or more | New snow in the month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| October | Kitzsteinhorn glacier, running since 10 October 2026 | 9.0 of 31 | 4.1 | 37.2 cm |
| November | Kitzsteinhorn glacier | 24.0 of 30 | 14.3 | 76.9 cm |
| December | Schmittenhöhe, planned from 4 December 2026; Kitzsteinhorn glacier | 29.5 of 31 | 27.1 | 90.1 cm |
| January | Schmittenhöhe; Kitzsteinhorn glacier | All 31 | 30.9 | 91.5 cm |
| February | Schmittenhöhe; Kitzsteinhorn glacier | Virtually every day (28.3) | All of them | 90.3 cm |
| March | Schmittenhöhe; Kitzsteinhorn glacier | All 31 | All 31 | 118.5 cm |
| April | Schmittenhöhe, with the areitXpress planned until 4 April 2027; Kitzsteinhorn glacier | 29.8 of 30 | 28.9 | 63.9 cm |
| May | Kitzsteinhorn glacier, planned until 17 May 2027, according to the Zell am See-Kaprun tourism board | 21.3 of 31 | 16.6 | 19.2 cm |
The Schmittenhöhe's lift company itself says climate change is bringing noticeably shorter and more volatile winter seasons.
Is there snow in Zell am See in December?
On the slopes, yes; in town, not reliably. At the Schmittenhöhe weather station (1,973 m), the 1971 to 2000 averages show snow on the ground on 29.5 of December's 31 days, 27.1 of them with at least 20 cm, and 90.1 cm of new snow in the month (ZAMG). The Schmittenhöhe plans to open on 4 December 2026, snow and weather permitting; in the 2024/25 winter it opened on 6 December 2024, and in 2025/26 on 29 November 2025. By then the Kitzsteinhorn glacier in Kaprun is already running.
In town, snow at Christmas is less certain. At the Zell am See weather station (766 m), the 1971 to 2000 averages show at least 1 cm of snow on the ground on 24.2 of December's 31 days and at least 20 cm on 8.1 of them, with 56.9 cm of new snow in the month (ZAMG). GeoSphere Austria says an average December in Austria has become about two degrees warmer over the last 50 years, that white Christmases in Austria are reasonably reliable only from about 800 metres, and that snow at Christmas is becoming rarer in low-lying places. Zell am See lies at 757 m.

Is Zell am See snow sure in March?
Yes, on the mountain, going by the long-term record: at the Schmittenhöhe weather station (1,973 m), the 1971 to 2000 averages show more new snow in March than in any other month, 118.5 cm, and at least 20 cm on the ground on all 31 days (ZAMG).
The Schmittenhöhe's lift company says March 2025 was unusually mild, yet the pistes were still in very good condition at the end of the season. It says the 2025/26 winter turned exceptionally mild from the last week of February, and its annual report warns of shorter, more volatile winters.
The areitXpress, trassXpress, cityXpress, Sonnenalmbahn and zellamseeXpress are planned to run until 4 April 2027, snow and weather permitting; the Schmittenhöhebahn, the cable car from the town centre, is planned until 29 March 2027. For skiing after 4 April, look to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, whose end-of-winter festival, the Gletscher Frühlingsfest, is on 1 and 2 May 2027.
Does the Schmittenhöhe have snowmaking?
Yes. According to the Schmittenhöhebahn AG's 2024/25 annual report, 100 per cent of its pistes are covered by snowmaking, with 625 snowmaking machines; rather than blanketing the slopes, the lift company makes snow only where it is needed. It also runs twelve pumping stations and three reservoirs.
Snowmaking starts once temperatures stay below freezing, and the lift company says it is there to keep the winter months snow-sure, not to stretch the season artificially. Its annual report adds that the base layer can be laid on the pistes quickly enough to secure the season start even in difficult weather; even so, the lift company says the 2026/27 start depends on snow and weather. So snowmaking is there for the main winter, which on the Schmittenhöhe is planned from 4 December to early April; before and after that, the skiing is on the glacier.
Is the Kitzsteinhorn glacier snow sure?
Its operator says so: Gletscherbahnen Kaprun, which runs the Kitzsteinhorn, advertises 'absolute snow reliability from October to May' on its glacier skiing page and puts it down to altitude and snow management. The Kitzsteinhorn, a bus ride from Zell am See, is the only glacier ski area in the Salzburg region, with pistes from 1,976 m to 3,029 m: groomed natural snow on wide glacier slopes. For the early start, snow is kept over the summer in large depots, as it has been on the Kitzsteinhorn since 2010, because in early autumn the air temperature, humidity and water temperature are often not yet right for snowmaking machines (snow farming).
Skiing has been running since 10 October 2026, when the first pistes opened down to the Gletscherjet 3+4 mid-station, and the season is planned to run until 17 May 2027, weather and snow permitting, according to the Zell am See-Kaprun tourism board. In the main season, the 3K K-ONNECTION lift links Kaprun village, at 768 m, via the Maiskogel with the glacier; in October and November, while it is not running, the Gletscherjet 1 and 2 take you up. Day tickets for Kaprun's lower mountain, the Maiskogel, are valid from 5 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, on the Lechnerberg too, according to Gletscherbahnen Kaprun.
At Hotel Der Schütthof the Guest Mobility Ticket is included, for public transport across the whole of the Salzburg region. For glacier days this autumn, note that Hotel Der Schütthof and Hotel Latini are closed from 26 October to 26 November 2026; Hotel Der Schütthof takes guests again from the night of 1 December, Hotel Latini from the night of 27 November. Lift pass prices, the glacier's autumn tickets included, are in our guide to the Zell am See ski pass 2026/27.
For freestyle, the Schmittenhöhe's own snowpark sits at 1,715 m, according to its lift company; on the Kitzsteinhorn the freestyle season starts in the autumn in the Glacier Park on the glacier plateau at 2,900 m, which stays open until December.
Is snow guaranteed in Zell am See?
No, not even on the mountain: the Schmittenhöhe's lift company says its 2026/27 start depends on snow and weather. Gletscherbahnen Kaprun says the skiing on the Kitzsteinhorn, the Maiskogel and the Lechnerberg stayed good all season, despite the dry 2025/26 winter.
If your dates fall at either end of the season, keep the glacier in your plans.
Is there snow in Zell am See at the moment?
Today's snow depths are in the snow report of the Zell am See-Kaprun tourism board, which measures at four fixed points: the Schmittenhöhe at 2,000 m, the Kitzsteinhorn at 3,000 m, the Maiskogel at 1,500 m and the valley at 750 m. For a look at the slopes, there are webcams on the Schmittenhöhe and the Kitzsteinhorn, and the lifts open today are on the Schmittenhöhe's opening hours page and the Kitzsteinhorn's hours of operation. Check them in the week before you travel, and again on the morning you head up.

January falls within the planned 2026/27 season on both the Schmittenhöhe and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, though the Schmittenhöhe's lift company warns that climate change is making winters shorter and more volatile.
How much snow does Zell am See get?
At the top of the Schmittenhöhe, snow lay on the ground on 213.9 days a year in the 1971 to 2000 averages for its weather station (1,973 m), 184.2 of them with at least 20 cm, and the deepest snow cover in that record was 350 cm, in April. In town, the Zell am See station (766 m) averaged 216.2 cm of new snow a year over the same period, with snow on the ground on 110.7 days, 49.2 of them with at least 20 cm (ZAMG, now GeoSphere Austria). These are long-term averages: Decembers in Austria have warmed by about two degrees over the last 50 years, according to GeoSphere Austria.

Working in quality management, I am involved in all sorts of things at the hotel: sometimes at reception, sometimes in the office, and really wherever there is something to be done. For me, Zell am See is not just where I work; it is a place I have grown very fond of, with its mountains, its lake and some truly special moments. My personal highlight: a few runs on the Schmittenhöhe, with the glorious view over Zell am See and the surrounding mountains.
